His work with The Bad Seeds is as prolific and distinguished a musical career as I can think of. He supersedes genre, with a rooted unpredictability that can reach from the gentle piano-folk of The Boatman's Call to the terrifying, bloody cold intensity of Let Love In. He has never rested on his laurels, but keeps on making music, growing as an artist, and expanding a profound legacy. For a taste of the man's musical integrity, go read his entire 1996 letter to MTV.
His achievements outside music include film, print, and a remarkably insightful preface to the Gospel of Mark.
Cave's is a world of damnation, redemption, blood, sorrow, loss, resurrection, judgement and forgiveness. It looks a lot like our world, bitter, often painful. Cave's response is both to rail and revel, to curse and to bless.
Thanks, Nick.
